Music Mappings

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

Over at kiev.ua they have worked out a system of mapping music to square where

Diagonal, vertical and horizontal intersections through the center of rectangle correspond to the strong beats of the bar and “time” coordinate. Distance from the center to the edge of rectangle is the second coordinate that reflects the pitch of note.

The rectangle should be isosceles (square), as the bars are equal by time. Distance from the center to the edge corresponds to octave; lower notes are located closer to the center, while high notes are closer to the edge of square.

The notes are transferred to the plane to their respective paths. There are 12 paths for the octave, according to the number of semitones in the octave.

Their theory also includes sound to color conversions, however all the examples on the site seem to be in black and white save one (which is in black, white and blue).

Some examples (they also have flash versions):
Beethoven's To Eliza Visualization Lennon/McCartney's When I'm 64

hobagletslive.com - Domain Name Suggestion Gone Bad

GoDaddy Name Suggestion - HoBagletsLive.com

GoDaddy.com likes to suggest alternate domain names to you based on your query. I was looking to see if holets.com was for sale yet (its an ad site that banks on mistyping hotels.com). It wasn’t, but thats not why I am writing this. GoDaddy had some crazy suggestions for alternate domain names besides the normal {domain name}{online | home | site | blog etc. }.com it suggested hobaglets.com, besthobaglets.com and my favorite (amoung others) hobagletslive.com.

Is hobaglets even a word? I don’t know. For sure hobag is… not so sure about hobaglets (small hobags?). How it ended up in GoDaddy’s pattern database I really don’t know. Anyways, I have included a screenshot of all the “hobaglets” suggestions GoDaddy had for me.

Mmm, Poisonous Fruit

Cashews in the shell
Apparently the reason you can’t get cashews in the shell is that the shell is poisonous. And the nut doesn’t even grow inside the shell.

Makes me think of castor beans. Castor oil has many uses in industry, medicine and food. You eat it all the time in most blended vegitable oils. However, the outer hull of the castor bean contains a posison called ricin, which is one of the most lethal poisons known. 150 μg of ricin (about as much material as there is in one LSD tab) could kill a grown man. My thesis advisor was once poisoned with ricin. He was working on castor beans in the lab and spilled a little (non-leathal amount) on his hand. Apparently it felt like his whole arm was on fire. Not something I care to experience.

On an interesting side note: when one considers that most of the most poisonous compounds are actually proteins, their lethality becomes even more staggering. For botulinum toxin, a 150 kDa protein, a lethal dose works out to be like 1/10th of a molecule of the toxin per cell in your body. Assuming the average number of cells in a body is ~10 trillion. Though if the toxin concentrated in neurons, we may be dealing with a number more like ~10 molecules per neuron.

Sinking Towns

A town in Oklahoma is at risk from cave-ins due to extensive mining. Crazy. Its obsolescence on the scale of a town. Find a mine, build a town, and in time you pollute/destroy the area so much that no one can live there. But by then the mine is closed, and few people want to live there anyways. Wasteful if you ask me. Never mind the damage done to the planet, how much does it cost to build a city that won’t be used in 20 years?

My high school is sinking. At a rate of 0.5-1cm a year. A lack of forethought with the foundation (its built on a filled in swamp). Rather than correct the problem, they took to patching the cracks in the walls each year till the building is depreciated and they can build another.

It Begins… ?

Well, I have gone ahead and installed WordPress. The plan is to start blogging all the crap that I “spam” my friends with. Lets see if this actually amounts to anything. I am notoriously bad at doing stuff like this. I predict maybe 6 entries before I grow tired and quit. But we shall see won’t we?
